Hyundai, the South Korean manufacturer, produced Hyundai Santro, the city car, from 1998 to 2014. The name ‘Santro’ has been derived for the Indian auto market from Saint Tropez, a fashionable city in France. At the time of its inception, Santro was meant to be a fashionable car for the Indian market.
The first generation of the car was released in 1998, and it started selling early in 1999. It was sold in Europe as Atos Prime, and in Indonesia and South Korea as Kia Visto. In India, it was named Santro Zip from 1998 to 2006. The company launched a facelifted Santro in 2003, which was known as Santro Xing from 2003 to 2014 in India.
Second generation Hyundai Santro was launched in India in 2018, with which the car came back to the country after a gap of 4 years. Powered by 1.1 litre Epsilon G4HG petrol, it is a bi-fuel engine that runs on both CNG and petrol. Available in 5-speed manual and 5-speed automated manual transmission options, it sold 8535 units within a month of its release.
Ranked among the Top 3 Urban World Cars of 2019, it is one of the highly in-demand cars available in the Indian market. Available in four variants as of now, Asta, Sportz, Magna, and Era, the CNG and 5-speed AMT options are available for Sportz and Magna variants only.
